A Summer at the Farmers Market: July 2026

There’s something special about spending a summer morning at a local farmers market. From colorful displays of freshly harvested produce to conversations with the farmers who grow it, each visit is a reminder of how closely cooking is connected to the changing seasons.

So far this summer, I’ve had the opportunity to visit two Connecticut farmers markets, each offering its own unique charm and an abundance of beautiful seasonal ingredients. Whether I was discovering a new vegetable, picking up sweet corn for a favorite recipe, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, every visit left me inspired to head home and create something delicious.

For me, farmers markets are more than a place to shop—they’re where many of my recipes begin. Walking through each market with an open mind encourages me to cook with what’s in season, support local growers, and let fresh ingredients guide my creativity in the kitchen.

Join me as I look back on this summer’s market visits, share what I brought home, and highlight the recipes that were inspired by these wonderful local finds.

🌽 Chester Farmers Market

If I had to choose one farmers market that truly feels like the heart of summer, it would be the Chester Farmers Market. It’s my favorite market to visit each year, and every trip reminds me why I continue coming back.

Although it’s a smaller market, that’s part of its charm. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with an abundance of beautiful seasonal produce from local farms and a strong sense of community that makes every visit feel special. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, browse each stand, chat with local growers, and appreciate the incredible variety of fresh ingredients available throughout the season.

Over the course of two visits this summer, I filled my market basket with sweet corn, green peppers, cucumbers, broccolini, zucchini, carrots, garlic, and asparagus. Every ingredient reflected the best of Connecticut’s summer harvest and inspired me to cook with the season rather than plan too far ahead.

My Market Basket

  • Sweet corn
  • Green peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Broccolini
  • Zucchini
  • Carrots
  • Garlic
  • Asparagus

Many of this summer’s recipes were inspired by ingredients I discovered at Chester. The sweet corn inspired my Corn & Shallot Caesar Salad, while the fresh asparagus, zucchini, broccolini, and carrots found their way into simple seasonal dishes like sautéed asparagus, spaghetti with a zucchini sauce, sautéed broccolini, roasted carrots, and a variety of fresh summer salads.

Every visit to Chester reminds me that some of my favorite meals don’t begin with a recipe—they begin with a stroll through the farmers market and a basket full of whatever looks freshest that day.

Coventry Farmers Market

Visiting the Coventry Farmers Market was a completely different experience from Chester, and that’s exactly what made it so enjoyable. As one of the larger farmers markets I visited this summer, it offered a lively atmosphere with a wide variety of vendors, live music, food trucks, and local farms, making it feel like more than just a place to shop—it was a community event.

One of my favorite parts of exploring Coventry was discovering vendors I had never seen before. I always enjoy learning about local businesses, and one farm in particular stood out. After stopping at their lavender stand, I found myself chatting with the owners, who were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They shared the many culinary and household uses for lavender, making the experience just as memorable as the purchase itself.

My market basket included fresh lavender and kohlrabi, a vegetable I had never cooked with before. Trying kohlrabi for the first time became one of my favorite discoveries of the summer. I loved experimenting with it in the kitchen, and it reminded me that stepping outside of my comfort zone often leads to the most rewarding recipes.

While Coventry offered an incredible variety of vendors and a fun community atmosphere, I found myself returning to Chester for its abundance of fresh produce. That’s one of the reasons Chester continues to be my favorite farmers market. Still, Coventry sparked new ideas in a different way—encouraging me to discover new ingredients, meet passionate local growers, and embrace the joy of trying something completely new. Sometimes the best inspiration isn’t the ingredient you planned to buy—it’s the one you’ve never cooked with before.
